Tone brings atmosphere, depth and form to drawings. Using light and shade, we can create everything from subtle shifts of mood to bold, dramatic contrasts. This session explores how different drawing materials can be used to build tone and create the illusion of three-dimensional form. This is an unpressured, motivating drawing workshop for anyone who feels they’ve drifted away from drawing and would like to find their way back in. The session is designed for people who already have a bit of experience - you might sketch now and again, or once drew regularly and miss it – but you’ve lost momentum, confidence, or simply haven’t had the time or space to keep going. It’s also ideal if you’d call yourself a beginner, but not a “first marks on paper” complete beginner. Led by Roger Towndrow, former Head of Fine Art at Falmouth University, the session offers a calm, encouraging environment to rebuild confidence and reconnect with drawing as something enjoyable and achievable. You’ll look at simple but powerful ways of seeing and recording what’s in front of you, alongside exercises that help loosen things up, reduce pressure, and get you drawing more freely again. There will be practical guidance throughout, but plenty of space to work at your own pace and in your own way. Most of all, this is about getting started again without judgement or overthinking, and rediscovering the pleasure of drawing as a regular, creative habit.
