Heritage Planning provides an overview of the legislative framework used to manage and protect Scotland's historic environment. The session runs at The Engine Shed in Stirling on 20 October 2026. Ticket prices range from £30.50 to £87.38.
An overview of the legislative framework governing how Scotland’s historic environment is managed and protected
Members of Historic Environment Scotland’s Heritage Team and Local Authority Planners will discuss how they manage change to Scotland’s built heritage, both in strategic terms as well as practical matters. This includes how proposals to alter listed buildings or build new developments in conservation areas are reviewed, considered, and determined both fairly and transparently.
A networking lunch will provide those opting to purchase the in-person learning experience the opportunity to continue discussions and explore the Engine Shed.
Our full-day experience includes an afternoon workshop to discuss recent developments in the conservation area and matters affecting the significance of a city’s historic townscape.
For those who cannot join us in person, a virtual ticket is available for the morning learning session. This will be hosted on Microsoft Teams, and the joining link will be sent to you a week before the event.
Learning outcomes
You will:
Understand how buildings, monuments, sites and areas are protected (and by whom) and how change is managed in Scotland.
Recognise how the cultural significance of Scotland’s traditional buildings and places is determined and how this informs decisions on applications to repair, alter or demolish.
Who should attend?
We encourage building professionals and managers, heritage professionals and those from relevant disciplines interested in developing their knowledge and practice in traditional buildings to consider attending. Local authority staff in relevant roles may also benefit from attending.
We also welcome people responsible for a traditional building, monument or site. It would also be useful for those with an interest in the management of conservation work at a strategic/policy level or an interest in the broader aspects of building conservation in Scotland.
