In September's Crumbs and Chronicle's Community Lecture, Derek Potter delves into one of the most notorious killings in the north east.

The "one-armed bandit murder" sent shock waves through the North East, and as the first gangland killing of its kind - it sparked fears that organised crime had gained a foothold in the region.

The heavily publicised trial resulted in life sentences for Dennis Stafford and Michael Luvaglio. However, both men have always insisted on their innocence. Stafford claimed the murder was committed by a Scottish gangster, while and Luvaglio pinned it on the Krays.

In fact, this murder had such an impact, it is said it inspired cult movie Get Carter, which starred Michael Caine.

- Attendance to these lectures is free but we encourage you to make a donation if you're able. Money raised will go towards future 17Nineteen Society events and to the Churches Conservation Trust towards the management and upkeep of Sunderland’s wonderful Georgian treasure.
