Artist bio
Rhys Cannon is a South Wales-based artist and educator who studied Fine Art at the University of Chichester, West Sussex. He was also the co-owner and resident artist at The Old Chapel Gallery in Abbotsbury, Dorset. His practice spans painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital media, and film, with subject matter ranging from landscapes and wildlife to portraiture, fantasy, surrealism, and contemporary culture. Alongside creating his own work, Rhys is passionate about experimenting with new materials, techniques, and creative processes. He is particularly interested in approaches that challenge traditional ideas of painting, using play, imagination, and sustainability to encourage people of all abilities to discover new ways of making art.
Outline
Led and guided by artist Rhys Cannon, Upcycled Worlds is a creative painting workshop that invites participants to transform unwanted or overlooked second-hand artwork into something entirely new. Using framed prints, paintings, and decorative artworks sourced from charity shops and reuse centres, participants through support from Rhys, will paint directly onto existing images, adding whimsical, surreal, humorous, or pop-culture-inspired elements to create unique hybrid artworks.
You are also very welcome to bring your own paintings and prints to reimagine. There will be paintings provided on the day.
Inspired by contemporary upcycling practice, the workshop encourages participants to see discarded objects as opportunities for creativity rather than waste. Whether adding giant creatures to landscapes, science-fiction elements to traditional scenes, or playful narratives to vintage paintings, participants will explore storytelling, imagination, and sustainability through art.
Encouraging participants to reconsider the value of existing objects and materials. Rather than purchasing new canvases or disposing of unwanted artwork, participants will give pre-loved pieces a second life through creative intervention.
The workshop explores questions around ownership, value, nostalgia, and transformation, while promoting sustainable artistic practices through reuse and repurposing. Participants leave with a unique artwork that celebrates both creativity and environmental responsibility.
