Gardening Course: The Kitchen Garden takes place on 18 October 2026 at the Heritage and Rural Skills Centre in Swindon. The course is free to attend and supports students of all abilities beginning their journey into vegetable gardening.
This course has been carefully designed to support students of all abilities, whether you are just beginning your journey into vegetable gardening or seeking to revitalise an existing or unproductive kitchen garden. Our aim is to ensure that everyone, regardless of experience, leaves with the confidence and practical know-how to grow their own produce.
For those with limited garden space, we will also explore the principles and techniques of container growing, demonstrating how to cultivate a productive garden even in smaller areas. The course will cover essential topics such as growing vegetables from modular plugs or by direct sowing, making compost, preparing the ground, and planning what crops to include in your kitchen garden.
Your tutors are Lizzie and Jo. Lizzie, lives and breathes plants and nature. Lizzie has a BSc in Plant Science from the University of Nottingham, followed by 5+ years training in horticulture and gardening on a large traditional countryside estate. She now runs her own gardening maintenance business. Jo's love of gardening came from her father's vegetable growing. Her love and enthusiasm for gardening began when she gained her RHS qualification's and had her first garden. Jo also has a FdSc in Garden design.
There will be a break for lunch and space to eat a packed lunch, alternatively there is an on-site café. Tea and coffee provided.
