A one-day course on Strawcraft will be held at the Heritage and Rural Skills Centre in Swindon on October 4, 2026. The course is free and will cover the history and traditions behind common Strawcraft items.
Learn fundamentals of the red-list skill of Strawcraft in this one day course. Understand the history and traditions behind common Strawcraft items, such as corn dollies before learning the practical skills, such as plaiting that go into making these items. You’ll leave with several harvest tokens and corn dollies of your own to take home with you.
This course is suitable for beginners, with no prior knowledge of Strawcraft needed. All materials will be provided.
Your tutor for this course is Ian Speechley, Ian has been involved with Strawcraft for many years, with his interest starting at primary school with artstraws. Ian enjoys bringing a contemporary twist to this traditional artform and is keen to show off its potential as a mindful activity.
Our class sizes are small, so you'll have a chance to engage with the tutor while you work. All materials and tools required for the course will be provided. This course takes place on Sunday 4 October, 10am-3pm. There will be a short break for lunch each day and tea/coffee is provided.
