Building Belonging: Spaces Between

In designing Winchester College’s first boarding houses for girls — a landmark in the school’s 644-year history — Stanton Williams considered the spaces between buildings as carefully as the buildings themselves. Kaori Ohsugi, Principal Director, will explore how courtyards, thresholds and shared spaces can foster belonging, security and community for young people living away from home.

This is a recurring thread in the practice’s work. Drawing on projects including Young’s Court at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and Eddington Keyworker Housing for the University of Cambridge, Kaori will explore how carefully considered outdoor and in-between spaces can create places that feel rooted, sociable and alive.

At Winchester, this approach draws on collegiate and Victorian boarding traditions while creating a contemporary, welcoming home that responds to the College’s evolving future as a co-educational institution. Kaori will reflect on designing for young people’s wellbeing and independence, and on what it means to create inclusive, human-centred places within a historic institutional setting.
