See care through young people’s eyes and discover how lived experience can strengthen relationships and improve fostering practice.

Walking in Our Shoes is a unique, young person-led training session developed by care-experienced young people in Hilingdon. The session gives foster carers an opportunity to hear directly from young people and gain a deeper understanding of what it can feel like to grow up in care and interact with the professionals and systems around them. Through interactive activities, lived-experience insights and an animation created by young people themselves, the training encourages participants to reflect on their practice, chalenge assumptions and consider how the voices and experiences of children and young people can better inform the support they receive.

Learning Outcomes:

Develop a deeper understanding of what it can be like to experience the care system from a young person’s perspective.

Hear directly from care-experienced young people and recognise the value of lived experience in shaping fostering practice.

Reflect on how professional decisions, communication and interactions can be experienced by children and young people in care.

Consider assumptions and behaviours that may affect how children and young people experience care and the professionals around them.

Understand the importance of listening to and incorporating the voices of children and young people into decisions that affect their lives.
