Interested in engineering, sustainability or green careers, but not sure where to start?
Building Futures is a free, hands-on 3-day programme for young people aged 16–25, designed to help you discover career opportunities, develop practical skills and gain experience you can use when applying for future jobs, apprenticeships or further study.
You don't need any previous engineering experience or technical knowledge. The programme is designed to give you the chance to try things for yourself, meet people working in the sector and explore where your own skills and interests could take you.
What will you do?
Across the three days, you'll take part in practical and interactive activities exploring both engineering and sustainability.
You'll:
Take part in a hands-on engineering build and design challenge
Work with others to solve a real-world sustainability problem
Explore careers in engineering, renewable energy, sustainability, manufacturing and other growing industries
Learn about different routes into these careers, including apprenticeships, college, university and entry-level opportunities
Meet and hear from people who currently work within engineering and sustainability
Identify the skills you're developing through practical activities
Receive support to strengthen your CV and employability skills
Develop your confidence in teamwork, communication, problem-solving and presenting ideas
Get guidance on your next steps and future opportunities
Hear from people working in the industry
Throughout the programme, you'll have opportunities to speak with people working in engineering, sustainability and related sectors.
You'll be able to ask questions about what their jobs are really like, how they got started, the skills employers are looking for and the different routes available to you.
Build experience for your CV
The programme isn't just about learning about careers — you'll gain practical experience that you can talk about in future applications and interviews.
By completing the team engineering challenge, you'll be able to demonstrate skills including:
Teamwork • Problem-solving • Communication • Creativity • Planning • Engineering design • Sustainability awareness
We'll help you recognise these skills and show you how to include them on your CV.
Before the programme
Before the course begins, each participant will have a short 10-minute welcome call with a member of the Make More CIC team.
This is simply an opportunity for us to get to know you, understand what you'd like to get from the programme and make sure we can support you to have the best possible experience.
