The Greyhope Morning: Change in our Ocean with Colin Moffat event will take place at the Greyhope Bay Centre in Aberdeen on September 22, 2026. Guest speaker Colin Moffat will discuss the consequences of change in the ocean and what can be done about it. The event is free to attend.
Change in the ocean is inevitable, but what are the consequences and what can we do about it?
Join us for a coffee morning with guest speaker Colin Moffat, a local marine scientist, at the Greyhope Bay Centre.
The ocean is essential for life on Earth as we know it. However, human activities have seriously impacted the ocean. This includes impacts from climate change. To date the ocean has absorbed over 90% of the heat resulting from greenhouse gas emissions. It has also absorbed about 30% of the additional carbon dioxide. This has made the ocean warmer and more acidic. The ocean is experiencing marine heatwaves, ocean currents are changing and, ultimately, the species and habitats are being adversely impacted. At the same time, offshore renewable energy is expanding to provide the electricity we use. The offshore area covered by wind farms is expected to greatly increase throughout the North Sea. This talk will explore what is happening and why. It will further provide some insight into what we, as individuals, can do to help reduce the significant impact that humans are having on the ocean.
Please note, the Cafe is closed on Tuesdays, however filter coffee, tea and herbal tea will be available from our lovely volunteers. Donations are welcome!
