A mandatory course for all fishermen with at least six months of experience.

Please note to obtain a Safety Awareness certificate, candidates must have completed the first four mandatory basic safety courses:

Sea Survival

First Aid

Fire Fighting

Health & Safety (if applicable)

Candidates must also have a minimum of six months fishing experience, accrued from the date a Sea Survival course is first completed. Please note that fishing experience refers to actual sea time, not the length of time elapsed since completing Sea Survival.

Fishers who were working in the industry prior to 1 January 2005 are not required to complete the basic health and safety course, these fishers only need to prove completion of the other 3 mandatory basic safety courses.

Foreign crew joining a UK fishing vessel must complete Basic Health and Safety prior to starting work on a UK fishing vessel.
