The interactive tour 'William Gibbs: Saint or Sinner?' at Tyntesfield delves into the estate's history, focusing on its chapel and offering access to rarely displayed rooms and objects. The tour presents contrasting narratives about the Gibbs family's faith and the human and environmental costs of their wealth. Participants are encouraged to engage in discussion about the themes presented.
On this interactive tour, you’ll spend an hour delving deep into Tyntesfield’s history in a small group. Our November tours are focused on Tyntesfield’s chapel, but you’ll also get special access to rooms and objects that aren’t usually on public display.
At the National Trust, we want to tell the fullest possible histories of the places in our care. It’s important that our interpretation is broad, fair, balanced and clearly evidenced. Sometimes, that means covering uncomfortable subject matters. We also want to listen and learn, and to encourage discussion and debate.
So, on this tour, we’ll be presenting two different sides to Tyntesfield’s story. We’ll look at the Gibbs family’s Christian faith and charitable causes, but we’ll also consider the human and environmental costs how the family made their fortune.
And, at the end of the tour, we’d like to hear from you. Was William Gibbs a saint, a sinner – or somewhere in between? And, finally, how do you think we should tell his story at Tyntesfield?
Please note that the house is otherwise closed on weekdays in November as we prepare for Christmas. We will be open as usual on weekends.
