A FREE sunset walk through Godmersham Downs, marking the Autumn Equinox with mindful walking, seasonal reflection and beautiful views.

Join us for a special evening walk through the beautiful countryside surrounding Godmersham, as we mark the Autumn Equinox and the changing of the seasons.

We’ll follow a scenic circular route through quiet countryside and woodland, taking time to slow down, connect with nature and appreciate the landscape around us.

From Godmersham, we’ll head towards Sole Street, enjoying beautiful views from the Downs before continuing through the peaceful surroundings of Denge Wood. From there, we’ll pick up the Stour Valley Walk and make our way to a viewpoint overlooking the valley, where we’ll pause to watch the sun set and reflect on the transition into autumn.

The walk will include moments of mindful walking and seasonal reflection, with time to simply enjoy being outdoors. We’ll also enjoy herbal tea and cake together before beginning our return journey.

This is a relaxed, guided walk, with plenty of opportunities to pause and take in the surroundings.

The walk will start at 4.30pm and last approximately 3 hours, including stops. We expect to finish at around 7.30pm, after sunset.

👩🏿 Who can attend this walk?

This walk is open to anyone who is comfortable walking approximately 8 km over undulating countryside, including climbs and can climb three stiles. The route includes hills, woodland paths, fields and uneven ground.

👨‍🦯 Is this walk suitable for those with other physical, learning, or mental health needs?

The route includes hills, uneven ground, three stiles and a gate where walkers will need to step over two low wooden trunks. It is not suitable for those using mobility aids. If you have any specific access requirements or would like to discuss whether the walk is suitable for you, please contact the organiser in advance.

🚸 What ages is this suitable for?

Ages 10+. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

🚂 Is this walk accessible via public transport?

Godmersham & Crundale Village Hall is served by bus from Canterbury and Ashford. However, the available services do not provide an ideal option for this event: buses from Canterbury arrive approximately 90 minutes before the walk starts, while buses from Ashford arrive around 30 minutes before the start. There are also no suitable bus services available after the walk finishes at approximately 7.30pm.

If travelling by public transport, please check the current timetable carefully and make sure you have arranged your return journey before booking.

The walk is not accessible by train.

🚗 Is there parking?

Free parking is available at Godmersham & Crundale Village Hall, CT4 7DR, where the walk will start and finish.

⛰ What is the terrain like on this walk?

This is a moderately challenging countryside walk with approximately 170 m of ascent. The route includes hills, woodland paths, fields, tracks, uneven ground and three stiles. There is also one gate where walkers will need to step over two low wooden trunks. Conditions can become muddy or slippery after wet weather. Good walking footwear with a decent grip is recommended.

Toilets will be available at Godmersham & Crundale Village Hall at the start of the walk ONLY. There will be plenty of opportunities for "wild wees".

🐕‍🦺 Is this walk dog-friendly?

Dogs are welcome on leads, although please note there are stiles which may cause difficulties. Please contact the organiser if you require any further information regarding this.

☕ Is there somewhere to get refreshments?

There are no shops or cafés along the route, so please bring anything you would like to eat or drink. Herbal tea and cake will be provided at our sunset viewpoint. ☕🍰

🪑 Are there seating options along the route?

There will be opportunities to stop and rest, although there are limited formal seating options along the route. It is recommended to bring a blanket to sit on.

🎒 What do I need to bring?

Please bring: Sturdy walking boots or shoes with good grip. Weather-appropriate clothing and layers. A waterproof jacket. Plenty of water. A small snack if required. A torch or headtorch for the return journey after sunset. Walking poles if you normally use them.

Please be prepared for changing weather and potentially muddy or uneven conditions underfoot.
