Public Lecture: Three Cheers for the Muddle in the Middle is scheduled for 3 October 2026 at Gladstone's Library in Hawarden. Professor Ian Bradley will discuss ambiguity and moderation in politics and religion during this talk. Admission is priced at £10.00.
Join Professor Ian Bradley for this public lecture at Gladstone’s Library. We live in a country and a world which are increasingly frightened and increasingly polarised. As levels of fear and uncertainty rise, people look for certainty and are attracted by the simple black and white certainties offered by extremist political parties and ultra-conservative forms of religion. Does the liberalism, both political and theological, which is under so much attack today and the rather despised moderate Broad Church tradition still have anything to offer? Ian Bradley argues that there is still room for ambiguity, tentativeness and a Broad Church middle of the road position in both politics and religion. ‘Muddle in the Middle’ may be what we really need. If you are interested in exploring doubt, nuance, ambiguity and open-minded uncertainty in Christianity further, this public lecture is part of a weekend residential course: Blessed are the Doubters. Course attendees automatically receive access to this public lecture. _ _ _ _ _ What is a Public Lecture at Gladstone’s Library?
