About This Event

Gladstone's Library hosts Talking Terror: an M.R. James Festival on 27 November 2026. The two-day festival features discussion, performance and candlelight celebrations of the master of the English ghost story. Guests include Robert Lloyd Parry performing stories by candlelight and Adam Z Robinson treating attendees to a performance of The Room in the Tower.

Join us to celebrate the master of the English ghost story, M.R. James, in this two-day festival! James’s ghostly tales were written to be read aloud to a gathering of friends, perhaps on a cold November night… so where better for us to gather than the gothic Gladstone’s Library for a festival packed full of discussion, performance and twinkling candlelight. This year, we welcome: Robert Lloyd Parry of Nunkie Theatre, performing the stories of M.R. James by candlelight (returning following sell-out performances since 2023) Adam Z Robinson, treating us to both a performance of The Room in the Tower by E. F. Benson and a live recording of The Ghost Story Book Club podcast with special guest Rosemary Pardoe (Jamesian expert, author and long-time editor of Ghosts & Scholars) Professor Darryl Jones (Professor of Modern British Literature and Culture) and Mark Valentine (short story writer, editor and essayist) joining Rosemary, Robert and Adam for two fascinating panels For this, the fourth year of our special M.R. James events, we are thrilled to return with an incredible two-day programme. Please scroll down for the full programme!
