Discover the past of Dublin’s forgotten Pigeon House Hospital in this in-person chat by Dr Susan Mullaney
In this talk, Dr Susan Mullaney explores the little-known history of the Pigeon House Hospital.
Few people now realise that a hospital existed on the Poolbeg Peninsula for fifty years during the twentieth century. It was initially established as an isolation hospital during the smallpox epidemic of 1903.
Having secured funding in the United States, the Women’s National Health Association, led by Lady Aberdeen, reopened it as a tuberculosis hospital in 1910. It became the first tuberculosis sanatorium in Dublin city.
The area has since become an industrial zone, and memories of the hospital are fading rapidly. This talk will explore how the hospital was established and trace its history until its closure in the 1950s, including the lives of those who lived and worked there.
