A bilingual discussion exploring what it means to translate other literatures into Irish. In this event, award-winning translators Antain Mac Lochlainn and Máirín Nic Con Iomaire will explore what it means to translate other literatures into Irish. Which books are being translated? What is not being translated or published? Are there particular challenges? Should a country translate from elsewhere? This conversation will be conducted in both Irish and English. Antain Mac Lochlainn is a writer and translator from Coleraine, Co. Derry. As well as being a prolific translator, he is editor of the translator resource site www.aistear.ie and has published several texts on writing in Irish. Máirín Nic Con Iomair e is Director of Translation Programmes at Maynooth University where she also teaches on the MA/Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Editing. In 2022, she was awarded the Gradam De Bhaldraithe for her translation of Khalil by Yasmina Khadra The conversations are inspired by Literature Ireland's collection of Irish literature in translation, which are also included in the National Library's book collection Funded as part of the Culture Programme for Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.
