About This Event

The Edinburgh International Festival presents *Ihsane* at the Festival Theatre on Tuesday 18 August 2026, at 7.30pm. Choreographed by double Olivier Award winner Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, this work draws deeply on the vibrant cultures of North Africa and the Middle East. The piece navigates a powerful emotional arc, moving through grief, anger, sorrow and celebration, as it reflects on the enduring cycles of destruction and renewal. The Festival Theatre, one of the city’s largest performance venues, provides a grand setting for this production, which forms part of the wider Edinburgh International Festival programme. This production explores the cycle of destruction and rebirth, moving through themes of anger, sorrow, and celebration. The performance incorporates Persian rugs and earth-toned costumes to pay homage to contemporary dance and cultural traditions, while confronting cycles of violence and persecution in tribute to a gay Moroccan man murdered in Belgium.

The work is choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and features dancers from his two companies, Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève and Eastman. Live music is composed and led by Tunisian viola d’amore player Jasser Haj Youssef.
