Two women. One bus. A whole lot of assumptions. What happens when a Pakistani woman who has spent most of her life in Scotland is constantly asked: ‘But where are you really from?’ From Pakoras to Porridge is a funny, thought-provoking and sometimes uncomfortable exploration of identity, racism and belonging in modern Scotland. Meet Lubna, a Scottish-Pakistani woman who is tired of having to explain where she comes from, and Jeannie, a well-meaning Scottish woman with absolutely no filter. Jeannie doesn’t think she’s racist. In fact, she thinks she’s being friendly! But her innocent questions and outrageous observations reveal prejudices she doesn’t even realise she holds. As their conversations unfold, sometimes but not always on a bus, the two women navigate cultural misunderstandings, awkward encounters and some uncomfortable truths. Against the backdrop of rising far-right attitudes, Jeannie begins to question her assumptions about migrants. Full of Scottish humour, warmth and sharp observations, and maybe even a song or two, this is a story about friendship, challenging prejudice and what it really means to belong.
