One of the most exciting young pianists from the UK, Jeneba Kanneh-Mason has been captivating audiences worldwide, including an unforgettable Usher Hall debut two years ago. We’re thrilled to have her back with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, to perform Mozart’s 20th Piano Concerto. Written when Mozart was enjoying great acclaim in Vienna, it deals in darker, minor-key colours than we normally find in his concertos, sharing a similar soundworld with his Requiem and opera Don Giovanni. There’s a frisson of unease that animates a tense dialogue with the orchestra, before Mozart flicks the switch for an upbeat ending, with a nod and a wink. A fleeting love affair provided some of the inspiration for Brahms’ Third Symphony, written in 1883, after he’d moved to Vienna. Although his Romantic attachment to alto Hemine Spies didn’t last, passion still courses through the symphony, pouring though free-flowing melodies and supple rhythms. This is Brahms at his most daring, revelling in rapid mood shifts, and injecting and releasing tension with carefree abandon. But there’s also great tenderness, too, with the heartfelt slow movement providing a blissful interlude, sighing with love.
