About This Event

The Woodturning Weekend Course is taught by Iain Stirling and Fi Gilfillan and offers students a first point of entry into woodworking with a focus on woodturning and round joinery. Over the weekend, participants learn to operate a lathe, use various tools, and construct a stool or plant stand with turned components. The course starts on 31 October 2026 and is priced at £450.

Our weekend woodturning course is taught by Iain Stirling and Fi Gilfillan, the School’s Woodturning specialists. This fun and informative weekend is one of our most accessible courses, giving students a first point of entry into woodworking, with a focus on woodturning and round joinery. It is also designed to be scalable, so that students can then apply their skills to a variety of other projects. During the weekend, students will make a stool or plant stand with a wooden turned top and three legs. Students will learn how to work a lathe whilst being introduced to a wide range of different tools and techniques. They will also learn how to make tenons, tapered legs, sand and finish on the lathe. Additional Dates: 28 November 2026, 23 January 2027, 20 February 2027
