Juxtaposing versus Linking Research Materials: Thinking through the ethical implications of different metaphors for knowing

This talk is based on two different research projects that both brought two very different types of ‘data’ together. The first is based on my book A Mouse in a Cage (NYUP 2025), which juxtaposed ethnographic fieldnotes with fiction. The idea of juxtaposition drew on multiple sources of inspiration from feminist Science and Technology Studies, including the work of Karen Barad, Mette Svendsen and Kalindi Vora. With this grounding in a valorisation of juxtaposition, I explore a current project that I am involved — one in which the possibility of linking rather than juxtaposing qualitative and quantitative research materials is the key site of a unique collaboration focused on human health. By bringing these two projects into conversation with one another, I argue for a plurality of metaphors for doing social science research.
