Join us for our 'Deutsche Runde', a friendly, guided session where we explore a different aspect of German language and culture each month.

After a summer of heat waves, droughts and fires, quite a few people were probably looking forward to seeing some proper, juicy rain again. But of course not when the eclipse is happening – right? After all, that’s when we were after a clear view of the spectacle. This example alone goes to show just how subjective and situational our perception of the weather as good or bad can be.

The weather has preoccupied people in ever-changing ways since time immemorial – be it as a sign of God, the basis for vital agriculture, the subject of meteorology or an innocuous topic for small talk at parties. But has there also been a change in societal perception in our own sphere and if so, can any cultural differences be noted between Scotland and Germany? We will examine these very questions in the spirit of everybody talking about the weather – and maybe even doing something about it!

One poignant example of a changed attitude towards the weather is Bodo Wartke’s song “Regen”. In the original 2007 version, he expressed his frustration at untimely precipitation whilst in 2021, he published an updated remake due to climate change. We can’t wait to hear what differences you see and which edition you like better.

It wouldn’t be Deutsche Runde if we didn’t also look at some idiomatic expressions, sayings and proverbs related to the weather theme, especially those that can also be used in a figurative sense. So please come along and join us in shining some light on all things weather. We would be on cloud nine to have you and will be there to give you a warm welcome, come rain or shine.

Deutsche Runde is an informal gathering and exchange around a chosen topic of German language or culture. It is ideal for learners with some knowledge of German (B1 and higher). This event is held in German.
