About Goddards

Goddards was built by Edwin Lutyens from 1898–1900 and enlarged by him in 1910. It is considered one of his most important early houses, designed in the traditional Surrey style and with a garden laid out in collaboration with the celebrated garden designer, Gertrude Jekyll. The commission was an unusual one. In the words of Lawrence Weaver, writing on Lutyens’ houses in 1913, it was built ‘as a Home of Rest to which ladies of small means might repair for holiday’.

Getting there and parking

By car: Take the A25, which runs between Dorking and Guildford. Four miles west of Dorking, or 2¼ miles east of Gomshall, is a turning to the south signposted ‘Abinger Common, Friday Street, and Leith Hill’. Take this road (do not take other roads to Abinger Common) and drive up it for about 1¼ miles, partly between steep banks. Ignore the left turn to Friday Street. Almost immediately after this turning is an open grass triangle of land on the right, with a metal fenced well toward the far end. Goddards is on the far side of this grassy triangle, behind a hedge.

Parking: To reach the parking area, ignore the sharp right turn at the end of the triangle and take the first turning on the right through a gate into the car park. The 'A' boards will indicate where to park.

Please wait in the parking area to be collected by the tour guide.

By train: Gomshall train station is 2 1/2 miles. Dorking train station is 5 miles. There is a bus service between Guildford and Dorking.

Address: Goddards, Abinger Lane, Abinger Common, Surrey, RH5 6JH

Donating to Landmark

The Landmark Trust is a building conservation charity that relies on donations to support its work. Over the past 60 years, public support has helped us rescue over 200 historic buildings and make them available for all to experience and enjoy. Your support by attending our events, booking a workshop, and making a donation allows us to continue to save buildings at risk and continue to maintain those already in our care. Your donation could help train the craftspeople needed to restore a future Landmark, offer opportunities for young people to experience history first-hand, or provide a charity with free Landmark stay for their service users through our Getaways for Good scheme.

Donations can be made when you book your Eventbrite ticket, at the event via contactless donation points, or after your visit via our website under Support.
