Author Hannah Levene discusses the mundanity — and surprising possibilities — of queer life in suburbia

A pair of queer Caffè Nero baristas, a high femme robotics engineer, a lost translator/gamer and a football coach named Butch converge in that most maligned of landscapes: suburbia. This smart, playful novel counters the idea of the suburbs as a place queers leave and plays out the radical implications of staying put. (Specifically, in Watford.)

Hannah Levene is the author of Greasepaint (Nightboat Books, 2024). She has a PhD in Writing exploring the composition of new butch literature. She is currently working on a collaborative novel with D Mortimer titled Abraham’s Bosom. A Pizza Hut, a Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut (Cipher Press, 2026) is her second novel.

Jeremy Atherton Lin is the author of the PROSE Award winner Deep House and the National Book Critics Circle Award winner Gay Bar. His essays have been published in The Paris Review, Times Literary Supplement, World of Interiors, Granta and The Yale Review.
