About This Event

The Winchester Wood, Summer Cut and Rake and Cowslip Check event is free to attend at a venue to be announced in High Wycombe on 2026-09-03. The event focuses on the Winchester Wood site and its connection to the Duke of Burgundy Butterfly and the Downland Plume Moth.

Transport & Address:

We will be working at Winchester Wood Covered Reservoir. We will meet everyone elso on site at 11:30am and finish at around 15:00.

If you are one of our volunteer brushcutter volunteers, it would be great if you can arrive for 9:45 so that we can get ahead an cut before everyone comes to start the rake at 11:30. Please text Paul to book a brushcutter, don't forget your safety glasses, helmet, long trousers & safety boots etc!

IMPORTANT DIRECTIONS - PLEASE CAR SHARE IF YOU CAN AS PARKING IS LIMITED:

Avoiding Narrow Part of Wardrobes Lane, From the Pink and Lily pub, HP27 0RH

Go down Pink Hill, merging into Wardrobes Lane and turn right into Brimmers Road and entrance to Winchester Wood is immediately on the right. We will need to park back to back along the narrow road that runs into Winchester Wood.

The Task:

We will be targetting areas to do a spring cut, rake and check the cowslips we planted over the winter , the food plant for the Duke of Burgundy Butterfly.

Timings (please note these timings are approximate):

9:45 Cutting Team Arrives

11:15 Tea Break for Brushcutting Team

11:30 All volunteers apart from brushcutter vols arrive on site for safety briefing, please don’t be late!

13.00: Lunch time, please bring your own (30 minutes)

15.00: Work finishes, time to go home!

What to Bring:

Please bring your gloves (we will have spares) and dress for the weather and the task.

Long trousers and sleeves are advisable as there may be ticks and thorny vegetation. We also recommend wearing steel toe capped or sturdy boots rather than trainers.

Wear layers that you can remove if you get hot whilst working. Bring a waterproof as most of our sites have no shelter from the rain. If it's sunny you may need a hat and suncream.

Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of fluids. We will bring a tea kit and biscuits.

The brushcutters will be noisy from time to time but we hope to have finished the noisy part by lunchtime!

Volunteering and COVID:

Please do not attend sessions if you have tested positive for COVID or if you have COVID symptoms e.g. a new continuous cough, a high temperature, a loss of, or change in your normal sense of taste or smell.
