A beautiful moorland walk, climbing Alderman’s Hill to Pots and Pans before crossing the ridge to Broadstone Hill trig point. Moderate

About this walk

This beautiful circular walk explores the wild moorland above Saddleworth, taking in Alderman’s Hill, Broadstone Hill and the iconic Pots and Pans monument, with far-reaching views across the surrounding hills and valleys.

We’ll climb steadily onto Alderman’s Hill before making our way across the moorland to Broadstone Hill and its trig point. Along the way, we’ll uncover some of the stories hidden in this landscape; from the striking war memorial at Pots and Pans to local folklore surrounding the hills and the unusual history of the Broadstone Hill trig.

We’ll walk at a relaxed, sociable pace with plenty of time to stop for views, history and a compulsory trig photo! Expect rugged moorland, rocky paths, some steeper climbing and plenty of classic Saddleworth scenery.

Distance: 7.8 km / 4.8 miles

Ascent: 276 m / 906 ft

Level of difficulty: Moderate – includes a sustained and fairly steep climb onto the moor, followed by uneven and occasionally boggy moorland terrain. Good footwear and a reasonable level of hill fitness are required.

Who will be your guide?

I’m Emily, founder of Peak Outdoor Community, and I’m a Mountain Leader based in Glossop at the edge of the Dark Peak. I’ve always been outdoorsy since being a young girl but hiking became a real obsession in 2019 when I started to go solo. I aim to inspire other women to learn the many benefits of exploring in the outdoors and I’m passionate about sharing my love for adventure with you!
