The Common Ground(s) exhibition
Common Ground(s) brings together seven artists whose practices engage with landscape, place, material and environment through very different approaches. The exhibition began with Steve Dilworth's Lapwing, a work that prompted an interest in the ways materials carry histories, traces and associations and in the possibilities that emerge when overlooked materials are given renewed attention.
From this starting point, the exhibition developed as a visual conversation between practices that respond to the physical world through making, collecting, drawing, painting, sculpture and material experimentation. The artists do not share a single understanding of landscape or environment. Instead, their differences create points of connection: between natural and manufactured materials, permanence and change, observation and intervention, the individual experience of place and the wider environments we share.
Common Ground(s) considers landscape not simply as something to be depicted, but as something lived, encountered and continually transformed. The works invite attention to the material world around us and to the traces through which places reveal their histories. Together, they ask how artistic practice might alter the way we look at the environments we inhabit and what might become visible when we look more closely.
The Walk - Approx 2 miles
The walk is classed as easy and on well trodden footpaths, although some of the terrain is uneven and steep in places. We will be walking and stopping to take in the landscape, so we will be out for around 1.5hrs. As always come prepared for the winter weather and terrain, bringing snacks and hydration for your walk if you wish. (You can leave your walking boots in the car whilst in the gallery)
