A simple but incredibly moving film by master Abbas Kiarostami, in which school children, palpably at the time of the Iran-Iraq war, are interviewed about homework and their lives. Kiarostami himself doesn’t know what the film is; A documentary? Fly on the wall? An analysis of school – parent – child relations? The children show themselves and their lives through their daily activities and anxieties. The camera and filmmaker is a shrouded staring presence, waiting for the children to explain themselves – why don’t they do their homework? – This screening is part of our new season, Between Innocence and Reality: Iranian Cinema and Childhood.
