About This Event
This event will be bookable on Monday 3 August 2026. A one-day workshop for artists and makers who want to gain tips and tricks to get the max from their social media. Do you want to start selling your art online? To get better at it but need to know more tricks of the trade? Why do hashtags matter? What actually is an algorithm and why should I care? Is AI going to steal my soul? Probably. But for now, tutor Rosie will teach you how to make social media and brand marketing your friend. We’ll show you how enhancing your online activity will actually make you want to create more and try new things rather than want to throw your phone at the wall! No matter what your craft or art discipline(s), if we reframe every single element of ‘posting online’ as artistic process, resistance, learning, political voice or just aesthetic beauty, then why not give it a go? It could get you some extra income, commissions, new opportunities, collaborations or just be a place to digitally archive your journey! Suitable for absolute beginners and those with some experience looking for new tips and ideas. The day will include: A breakdown of different types of content and why they’re important Why your brand is YOU and how to harness this Jargon debunked – hashtags, algorithms, wips – what does it all mean?! How to be a star pupil in the metaverse Building an online presence Selling your work Building your strategy (or not worrying if you don’t have or want one) Photography, still images and video online – what, where, when and how! The emphasis will be on Instagram, TikTok, CapCut and how to turn the mundane into engaging content (you’re already great at this by the way, you’re an artist!) Additional information You will need a smart phone with enough storage to take lots of pictures and short videos, access to the internet and your chosen social media platforms (Rosie won’t be covering Facebook as she’s told by much younger people it’s not worth it!) You will also need to download an app called CapCut which is free video editing software (this app will constantly ask you to pay for the ‘pro’ version, you absolutely do not need to do this!) You will need lots of physical copies of any of your work. It doesn’t matter what sort of art you do, we will just need to have some of it with us so we can take photos and videos! Please also bring an open mind – if you’re a technophobe then this course is for you. I’ve had to really train myself to not care what others think and to try absolutely everything. Social media can be fickle but I’d like to think I’ve learnt how to tame it! About the tutor: Tutor Rosie Johnson is a self-taught artist and illustrator. She specialises in modern calligraphy, hand printing, decorative homeware, digital illustration and graphic design with a sprinkle of glitter! Rosie has been teaching for a number of years now and runs her own business making all things quirky and alternative. She believes everyone has creative talent and loves proving herself right in every class she teaches. Further information: This one-day workshop starts at 10am and ends at 4pm on Monday 5 October 2026. There’ll be a short break for lunch. Our café will be open or you are welcome to bring your own refreshments. Recommended for ages 16+. Under 18s must be accompanied by a paying adult at all times. If the course/workshop you’d like to book is sold out, we do operate a waiting list – simply contact our box office team on 0116 252 2455 / arts-centre@le.ac.uk and ask to be added to the waiting list. We’ll then contact you if a place becomes available, with absolutely no obligation to accept it if you’ve made other plans! Please ensure that you read and agree to our updated Terms & Conditions before booking as courses/workshops are non-refundable if cancelled within 21 days of the start date for any reason. We aim to make all our sessions as accessible as possible and carers/PAs are very welcome – just remember to book their free place when you book your session. If you’d like to talk to us in advance of booking or attending your sessions to discuss your access needs, our Box Office team is here to help! Email arts-centre@le.ac.uk, pop in or call 0116 252 2455, open 7 days a week. We have four blue badge parking spaces outside Attenborough Arts Centre, plus double yellow line roadside parking very close to the building for blue badge holders for up to three hours if our parking spaces are occupied. Free parking for all customers is available after 5pm on weekdays and all day at weekends in the University of Leicester car park next door to Attenborough Arts Centre on Lancaster Road. The closest public car park for parking at all other times is Victoria Park, 5-10 minutes walk from us (near De Montfort Hall).
