A panel discussion featuring artist-curators of domestic spaces to mark the release of The Apartment, Home As Artspace.

Join us for an evening about domestic artspaces. More than a space shared by art and home, the apartment-gallery’s accumulated, lived-in nature provides a temporal context for the experience of art and a site for institutional critique.

Together, we'll explore the multifaceted ways that domestic artspaces open possibilities for creative and cultural production, and how the ways we inhabit our homes nourishes our encounters with art.

Expanding on the topics of The Apartment, Home As Artspace, the authors, Michelle So and Robin Leverton, will host an open conversation between panellists and audience members, bringing together artist-practitioners of domestic artspaces featured in the book, including:

Lucy Cowling & Mark Couzens (KIP Gallery)

Kip is a project space for contemporary art, located in South East London. Founded in 2024, it is run by Lucy Cowling and Mark Couzens. Kip collaborates closely with invited artists to realise projects.

Shaun McDowell (Peckham Art Squats)

Shaun McDowell is a British artist and curator based in the Sabine Hills of Lazio, Italy. A founding figure in the Peckham art scene, McDowell is renowned for his gestural, chromatically charged abstractions, and has been hailed by the Financial Times as “the most exciting abstract painter of his generation.” Alongside his practice, he has a long history of organising exhibitions in London’s independent spaces, including the landmark gatherings at 78 Lyndhurst Way and 88 Friary Road.

Tomas Spicer (House Work Presents)

Tomas Spicer is a London-based artist working across painting, drawing and installation. His practice explores language, literacy and processes of meaning-making, with a particular interest in abstraction and the relationship between material, gesture and communication. House Work Presents is an artist-run, community-focused platform rooted in dialogue, experimentation, and care.

Willem Deisinger (Jetty)

Willem Deisinger is a writer, editor and producer exploring how we build a home in a world directed by technology. Focusing on community-centric internets, obsolete technologies and digital cultures, Willem fosters dialogue around culture and technological entanglements through artistic production, workshops, and public programming. He makes up half of Jetty, a critical technologies studio working with communities, organisations and artists to build experiments around media and collective organising that offers new modes of resiliency and agency within technology and culture.

About The Authors:

Michelle So and Robin Leverton are London-based artists and curators who co-founded The Apartment, a yearly exhibition series staged in a residential flat in Bermondsey. Since its first edition in 2023, the series explored the friction between art, technology, and the domestic space. They brought these experiences into print to archive this practice, expanding from their own exhibitions to gather writings and interviews from other apartment-gallery spaces around the world.

This archive of The Apartment exhibitions illuminates the experience of gallery-making in a Bermondsey home, where art can feel both seamless and strange.
