About Fences

Fences at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh, in a new production directed by award-winning Daniel Bailey (Red Pitch, West End).

Troy Maxson has cheated death once, but the past keeps closing in. At home, the pressure builds as his wife, Rose, tries to hold the family together while their son Cory looks towards a different future. As ambitions collide and tempers flare, the Maxson family is drawn towards a reckoning.

Written by one of America’s most influential 20th century writers, Fences is a drama about ambition, family and changing expectations, with a story that remains relevant in the present day.
