Spend an evening in the company of Angela Saini, one of the UK’s most important voices in science writing, who will discuss how gender, race and history continue to shape our lives. Angela will be sharing findings from her forthcoming book, Other, which looks at the strange and growing obsession with sex and race classification. We accept human classification as a part of life, ticking sex, gender, race and ethnicity boxes as automatically as we drink water. However, we too easily forget that the origins of human classification were far less benign. Race categories were designed specifically to divide, rule, and oppress. Sex-based laws denied women equal rights for centuries. The boxes we tick are not politically neutral. When we tick them, we are submitting to someone else’s definition of what they mean. The Public Lecture promises to be a hugely insightful and entertaining evening in support of the Foundation and its work showcasing sociology as a powerful tool for understanding and changing the world around us.
