About This Event

The Middlesbrough Voluntary Development Agency, or MVDA, is set to host a Charity Finance and Bookkeeping Training Course on Monday 7 September 2026, commencing at 6pm. This free workshop is aimed at staff and volunteers involved with charitable organisations who require guidance on managing their accounts. A range of experienced trainers will lead the session, covering the fundamentals of charity-specific financial reporting, best practices in bookkeeping, and the relevant regulatory requirements. The course will take place at MVDA’s own premises in Middlesbrough. Attendees are advised to bring a notebook along with any pertinent financial documents for reference during the training.

This practical session introduces the key financial responsibilities charities face and explores straightforward ways to manage finances safely, clearly, and in line with legal requirements.

Understanding basic financial responsibilities, reporting requirements, and who charity accounts need to be provided to

The importance of keeping clear and accurate accounting records—and how they support transparency, control, and trust

Different types of charity accounts, including receipts & payments and accruals, and when each is appropriate

Understanding financial statements such as income & expenditure reports and balance sheets

Safe and practical bookkeeping methods, including double‑entry bookkeeping explained in plain English

Managing restricted and unrestricted funds correctly

Handling cash safely, including petty cash systems, audit trails, and expense controls

Good financial safeguards, checks, and balances—including trustee oversight, bank reconciliation, and fraud prevention

Who is it for?

Ideal for trustees, treasurers, staff, volunteers, and committee members of new or smaller charities, community groups, CICs, and voluntary organisations.

Especially useful for anyone with financial responsibility who does not have a finance background but wants to feel more confident and informed.
