Artist Michael Rowley describes his experience from the set of this classic film.
Mel Gibson's epic movie was filmed in the main in Ireland in 1994. The Battle of Stirling scenes were filmed on the Curragh with thousands of F.C.A. extras used in the battle scenes. Curragh native Michael Rowley had unrestricted access to the movie set and as a result has been hooked on collecting memorabilia relating to this movie ever since.
The current Braveheart exhibition at Lucan Library coincides with the 30th anniversary of Braveheart winning five Oscars in March 1996.
This totally new exhibition is gaining momentum and it is growing yearly for a spectacular exhibition to mark the 35th anniversary of the making of Braveheart in Ireland in 2029.
Michael Rowley is an award winning artist and his 19th solo exhibition will be held in Mayo in 2027. His Braveheart themed Curragh landscapes solo exhibition at Castle Craft Trim in 2025 which coincided with events to mark Trim's connection as a location for Braveheart was a great success. A number of Braveheart actors have Michael's Curragh Braveheart landscapes in their private collection.
Michael Rowley is an avid Curragh local historian and Chairperson of the Curragh Local History Group. He has curated a number of historic exhibitions around County Kildare and his latest, "Hollywood In Kildare" launched in Kildare Library in late August.
