About This Event

A birdwatching event will take place at the Tyne Derwent Way at Dunston Staiths on 15 August 2026. Participants will observe the Tyne Estuary at low tide from the historic staiths. Tickets are priced between free and £12.00.

Join us for special birdwatching event from the top of the historic Dunston Staiths , to overlook the Tyne Estuary at low tide.

Join us for a peaceful morning of birdwatching on the Dunston Staiths, a historic structure linked with our coal industry heritage, and a prime location for watching a diversity of resident and wintering birds on the Tyne Estuary.

From this raised platform set within the Tyne , you can enjoy spectacular views of the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside, along with the estuarine mudflats which are an important food source for birds.

Led by knowledgeable guides from Wild Intrigue, you will search for seasonal species such as Grey Heron, Shelduck, Cormorant, Redshank and Gulls and perhaps wildlife spotted in previous events such as Kestrel, Kingfisher and Grey Seal.

There will be plenty of opportunities to discover more about the local history and ecology of the birds you encounter, and to the importance of the Tyne Estuary for wildlife.

All species will be recorded as part of ongoing wildlife survey effort along the Tyne Derwent Way.
