About this Event
Howick could be labelled “Northumberland in a Nutshell” when it comes to its geology. This walk from Sugar Sands Bay to Cullernose Point will pass over Carboniferous sediments including Limestone, Shale, Sandstone, Seatearth and Coal. Igneous intrusions of Whin Sill have baked the rock into which they have intruded, producing metamorphic hornfels.
We shall see a range of sedimentary structures as well as fossils of marine and terrestrial life – from trilobites to trees, burrows to footprints.
Accessibility
The walk will be about 4 miles, partly on sandy beach and rocky foreshore but half will be on the coastal path.
Essential equipment
Sturdy footwear, outdoor clothing, lunch.
Description supplied by the event organiser.
