What DID the Romans ever do for us? This isn’t just a story of imperium and of empire – it’s your story too.
Wednesday 2nd December | 6pm
What DID the Romans ever do for us? Find out with John Sadler and Bev Crowley, historians and, in Bev’s case trained, and in John’s experienced amateur archaeologists, as we embark on a journey not just along Hadrian’s great Wall but through its inception, construction, purpose, history, loss and rediscovery, how the garrison of the Wall forts was recruited, trained and how it worked. For the better part of four centuries the Wall dominated that northern frontier, the very symbol of Rome striding over the high Whin Sill, like a statement of Pax written in stone and mortar. Discover or rediscover what it was like to stand on the northwest frontier of an empire who’s eastern flank rested on the Euphrates, 6,000 miles distant. Explore the impact the Wall has had, has and will continue to have on our region and our self-protection. This isn’t just a story of imperium and of empire – it’s your story too’
