Rise and Design is a business event taking place at the Northern Design Centre in Newcastle on 11 September 2026. The session begins at 09:30 and is free to attend. The discussion focuses on the capabilities of AI compared to human skills.
........there are some things where humans are just better
We've all had our minds blown over the last couple of years, dazzled and amazed by what AI can do and 'create'. Including the image above.
And while Copilot, ChatGPT et al can do a great job of gathering information, refining spreadsheets, creating code and analysing data, there are some areas where it can't match the human touch.
So we'll be hearing about some of tasks that simply can't be replicated or replaced by AI, not yet anyway, and some of the problems and issues you might face when you a hand over too much responsibility to a machine. A very efficient machine, but a machine none the less
Speakers include -
Elizabeth Waterman, Design Consultant, e3design
From their studio on the banks of the Tyne, e3design turn ideas into products, whether you're a global brand such as Tommee Tippee, P&G or Unilever, or a start-up company that has big plans, such as MudDaddy, OGEL or Geordie Gin.
But increasingly, they're being approached with more than an idea or concept, but with a fully rendered design created by one of any number of freely available design tools. And more often that not, these 'products' are not just impractical, they're completely unmanufacturable, or even downright dangerous.
And while these tools can be invaluable for generating ideas, they're simply no match for a designer with years or decades of experience.
Elizabeth will talk about how to get the right balance between human and machine.
Alex Craig, Partner and Head of Commercial, Muckle LLP
Whether it's a contract, a license agreement or a patent application, Chat GPT can rustle up a credible looking legal document in a matter of seconds. But as the saying goes, 'the devil is in the detail', and you really don't want to find out the hard way that the agreement you thought was watertight is actually full of holes.
However there are many ways in which AI is helping lawyers to be more efficient and to deliver a better service.
Muckle have been operating as a law firm in Newcastle since 1920, helping regional, national and international clients with their legal needs, and Alex will tell us more about how they are adapting to this new world.
James Hanson, Founder/Designer, Layers Studio.
Branding and marketing relies on visual images to convey the right messages and foster familiarity. We all know that a logo is not a brand, and while there are numerous apps that can create a free logo in seconds, what they can't create is that deep understanding of your values, mission, and why your customers love you. And because 'people sell to people', it really can't be left in the hands of something that isn't.....people.
However there are a myriad of useful tools out there and so James will tell us more about how they navigate this AI powered world.
And as usual there'll be lots of time for chattng and meeting new fabulous people.
Rise and Design lasts for approximately three hours, and includes networking before and after speakers. There is a chance to pitch at the end of the speakers' presentations, and you can book a stand for the whole event. We encourage all delegates to stay after presentations for networking - it is one of the most valuable parts of Rise and Design.
