Join macro and wildlife photography educator Stewart Wood in our Newcastle store for a fascinating close-up look at insect photography.

Combining an illustrated presentation with a live demonstration, Stewart will reveal how he creates detailed macro images—from controlling light and depth of field to composing, focusing and working patiently with a live subject.

During the demonstration, Stewart will photograph a jumping spider or mantis, with his camera’s live view displayed on a TV so everyone can follow the complete process and see how each image develops.

Stewart will demonstrate using both Sony and OM SYSTEM equipment, explaining how and why he uses each system for different approaches to macro photography. However, the techniques covered can be applied to any camera system, and photographers using all brands are welcome.

Session times

Three sessions are available, each lasting approximately one hour. Free to attend and open to a limited number of customers per session. Total of 6 x customers per session.

Each session will include:

Introduction and presentation — 15 minutes: Explore examples of Stewart’s work, the equipment he uses and the creative decisions behind his images.

Live macro demonstration — 30 minutes: Watch Stewart photograph a jumping spider or mantis while explaining his lighting, focusing and composition techniques.

Questions and discussion — 15 minutes: Ask Stewart for practical advice on equipment, technique and developing your own macro photography workflow.

As the demonstration involves a live subject, the exact pace will respond to the insect’s behaviour, with breaks taken when required. Stewart will also use prepared images to explain techniques that may not be possible to demonstrate live on the day.
