About This Event

A talk on the history of execution in Nottingham will be held at Nottingham Central Library on 31 October 2026. The National Justice Museum will present details on how Gallows Hill operated as the main execution site. Admission is free.

Gallows Hill was for the longest time the main execution site in Nottingham. Throughout the 1700s and 1800s a mix of criminals met their end here. From the humble thief to the most notorious murderers. How did executions operate there and why did it stop?
