About This Event

On August 19th, 2026, Uruj Anjum will present a webinar titled "Beyond the Family Tree: Genograms, Attachment & Trauma" online. This event aims to explore how genograms can be used to uncover attachment patterns, family dynamics, trauma, loss, resilience, and inherited experiences across generations. An engaging session for those working with clients affected by trauma or interested in understanding deeper familial connections.

Learn how to use genograms to uncover attachment patterns, family dynamics, trauma, loss, resilience, and inherited experiences across generations.

Working with clients affected by trauma, relationship difficulties, loss, family conflict, caregiving responsibilities, or inherited conditions? Genograms can help uncover the attachment patterns, family dynamics, and intergenerational stories that often sit beneath the presenting issue.

As therapists return from summer and prepare for a new academic year, a fresh intake of clients, and deeper clinical work, this workshop offers an opportunity to return to curiosity and strengthen your therapeutic toolkit.

Many practitioners receive little training in how to use genograms beyond basic family mapping. Yet a genogram is far more than a family tree. When used thoughtfully, it can reveal patterns of attachment, trauma, caregiving, grief, resilience, cultural influences, family roles, inherited beliefs, and intergenerational experiences that may otherwise remain hidden. It can also be invaluable when working with clients affected by genetic diagnoses, inherited conditions, rare diseases, and family health histories, helping us understand how illness, risk, loss, and uncertainty are experienced across generations.

In this practical and reflective workshop, we'll explore how genograms can deepen assessment, formulation, and therapeutic understanding. Drawing on attachment theory, family systems thinking, and genetics-informed practice, we'll move beyond symbols and structure to uncover the stories families carry across generations. Together, we'll explore themes such as connection and disconnection, migration, illness, loss, secrecy, addiction, identity, inherited conditions, and family narratives.

You'll learn how to draw and use genograms confidently in clinical practice, discover key questions that open meaningful therapeutic conversations, and explore how genograms can become a rich relational intervention.

Whether you're new to genograms or looking to refresh and deepen your practice, you'll leave with practical skills, renewed curiosity, and a powerful framework for understanding how family stories, attachment patterns, and inherited experiences continue to shape present-day relationships, emotional wellbeing, and therapeutic work.
