Working with Genetic Uncertainty, Grief and Family History in Therapy - Uruj Anjum offers a cost ranging from £1.00 to provide support for clients dealing with inherited conditions and family history issues.
Build confidence in working with clients affected by inherited conditions, uncertainty, grief, and family history.
Many of our clients carry questions that have no easy answers. Questions about illness, family history, fertility, parenthood, identity, risk, caregiving, loss, and what it means to live with uncertainty.
**They may be asking:**
- Should I have predictive genetic testing for Huntington's Disease?
- Could I pass this condition on to my children?
- How do I talk to my family about this?
- How do I live with not knowing what the future holds?
- How do I make decisions about IVF, PGT-M, pregnancy, or parenthood when genetics is part of the picture?
- How do I grieve a loss, pregnancy outcome, or future I had imagined?
While genetic information is often viewed medically, its emotional and relational impacts are profound. Around 1 in 17 people will be affected by a rare disease during their lifetime, meaning many therapists are already supporting individuals, couples, and families navigating inherited conditions, uncertainty, caregiving, grief, and complex decision-making.
This workshop offers a practical and accessible introduction to genetics-informed psychotherapy. Drawing on attachment theory and Uruj's unique experience as both a psychotherapist and former NHS Research Genetic Counsellor, we will explore how inherited experiences can shape identity, relationships, family narratives, loss, hope, and future planning.
No prior genetics knowledge is required.
Whether you work with individuals, couples, families, or supervise practitioners, this session will help you recognise genetics-related themes when they emerge and feel more confident holding conversations about uncertainty, risk, illness, family history, and reproductive decision-making.
Because genetics is more than about DNA; it is about relationships, belonging, identity, grief, hope, and the stories carried across generations.
