On 5 December 2026, Stefan Charidge presents an online experiential workshop on using paper in therapy to externalise emotions and sensations. The session explores how pen and paper can act as a transitional object for clients to project and process complex feelings. It offers practical techniques for integrating this tool into therapeutic work. Tickets cost from £1.00.
**The Power of Paper**
**An experiential workshop.**
Throughout my training and early years in practice, I explored a wide range of therapeutic resources—stones, two-chair work, beanie babies, shells, coloured cloths, ropes, clay, fire rituals, Russian dolls and many more. Each has offered valuable ways of supporting clients in their healing journey.
Yet over the past few years, particularly through delivering thousands of sessions remotely and over the phone, I have discovered that one of the simplest resources is often the most powerful: **pen and paper**.
In this practical webinar, you'll discover how paper becomes far more than a place to write. It becomes a **transitional object**—a tangible space onto which clients can project the energy of a person, event, sensation, belief, or feeling. Once that experience exists on paper, it becomes something they can see, relate to, and interact with in meaningful ways.
I believe this process deserves greater recognition within the Gestalt community through the concept of **objectification**. While talking therapies are immensely valuable, spoken words alone cannot always be engaged with in the same way as something made visible and external. When experience is objectified, clients can work directly with it, with the use of their anger energy (which is not aggression), creating opportunities for deeper awareness, connection, and transformation.
Drawing on Gestalt principles, Jung's insight that _"the right question is half the therapy,"_ and my own belief that **the right invitation is the other half**, this webinar explores how simple invitations can unlock profound therapeutic work.
You'll learn how inviting a client to "put something on a piece of paper to represent the energy of............ and it can be a line or a dot" can open new possibilities in therapy. It doesn't require artistic ability (which can become a bloke). This removes anxiety about drawing and keeps the focus firmly on the client's experience rather than the image itself.
The webinar will also demonstrate how paper can be integrated into:
- Face-to-face therapy
- Telephone and online sessions
- Chair work and Gestalt experiments
- Anger and aggression processes, such as tearing or crumpling paper
- Grief and sadness work, using the paper as an object to hold, comfort, or dialogue with
These simple yet profound techniques allow clients to externalise what has previously remained internal, making difficult emotions easier to approach, understand, and integrate.
Drawing on concepts from _The Penny Model Revised_, [www.thepennymodel.com](http://www.thepennymodel.com/) we'll explore how objectification supports work with grief, love, anger, addiction, depression, beliefs, and emotional blocks. By transforming invisible experiences into something visible and tangible, clients are often able to make connections that talking alone cannot achieve.
As the saying goes, _a picture paints a thousand words_. Sometimes, a single piece of paper can hold a lifetime of experience—and become the starting point for meaningful change.
Whether you're an experienced therapist, counsellor, coach, or trainee, this webinar will provide practical techniques you can begin using immediately, helping clients gain greater clarity, emotional movement, and lasting insight.
