About This Event

Mushroom workshops run at CityFarmHouse on 19 September 2026 at the venue on 103 Union St in Plymouth. Pricing details are available via the website for sessions teaching participants to grow mushrooms from household waste.

Learn to grow gourmet mushrooms from waste we all have at home - while learning lots about fungi!

The Mission

CityFarmHouse is an urban farm based in C103, an abandoned nightclub that has been brought back to life into a space for local communities and organisations. We grow mushrooms and greens for commercial purposes, but our aim extends far beyond our hyperlocal produce. We strive to make this old nightclub a space where science, art, sustainability and education converge to elevate the local community, inspire future generations, and reconnect with the natural world and the food that we consume.

If you have cardboard and an old plastic container, and some supermarket mushrooms, you already have everything you need to grow mushrooms at home! Come find out how to grow them with us, and earn yourself an almost infinite supply of mushrooms at home!

In this hands-on workshop at City Farm House, you'll get a proper introduction to the world of fungi: what mushrooms actually are, why they matter to ecosystems, and how you can easily grow them at home!

Roll up your sleeves, inoculate your own grow kit using waste materials and leave with a living kit ready to fruit blue oyster mushrooms on your kitchen counter.

What to bring: This workshop runs on waste — so raid your recycling first. Ink-free and plastic-free cardboard, used coffee grounds, and clean food containers. Bring what you'd otherwise throw away and we'll put it to work!

Ticket costs and fair access

These workshops normally cost £15 per person — but thanks to support from the Livewell Foundation and the Rank Foundation, we're able to offer tickets on a donation basis. We don't want cost to be a barrier for anyone, so pay what feels right for you.

What your donation can do

Suggested donation £10

Not sure how much to give? Here's what different contributions make possible:

£5 — covers the equipment cost

£15 — covers your full workshop cost

£30 — funds a session for someone who couldn't otherwise afford to come

£50 — covers the small costs of running a farm like ours for a week (seeds and spawn, substrates, disposables)

£100 — gets us closer to a laminar flow hood for clean lab work — a big step towards full self-sufficiency

£250+ — helps us expand our growing infrastructure, allowing us to grow more and increasing what we can teach!
