We are looking for volunteers to help us collect intertidal seagrass seeds from a healthy meadow in Torpoint.
We are looking for volunteers to help us collect intertidal seagrass seeds from a healthy meadow in Torpoint.
The activity involves using bodyboards and mudshoes to head out onto the intertidal meadow while the tide is low. We will use the mudshoes to walk to the edge of the meadow and then use the bodyboards to create a 'pontoon' to kneel on and pick the seed pods from the plants.
Please watch the video to see an example of our volunteers at work! - Introduction to seagrass volunteering- video
Please be aware, walking on the mud can be strenuous on your knees and legs, and picking the seeds requires a lot of kneeling and getting up and down. Due to the nature of the activity we will stick together while on the mud. We plan to spend 2 hours on the mud picking seeds, so please plan accordingly,
What to bring:
A pair of waterproof trousers and a coat that you don't mind getting dirty.
Either walking boots, good fitting wellies (if they are loose you will struggle to walk on the mud), or above-the-ankle wetsuit boots (these can be provided on request)
A water bottle and packed lunch to eat on the shore after we have collected the seeds.
Please bring an old bodyboard if you have one that you are happy to use in our bodyboard train.
The seed pods are very small so please bring reading glasses if you need them
Parking:
There is free on-street parking near the meeting point or ‘Fore street parking’ is a paid for car park. Please allow plenty of time for parking, as spaces close to the meeting point are not always available.
Toilets:
There are no toilet facilities at the meeting point, please use the public toilets at Thanckes Park on the way into Torpoint, or the toilets on the ferry if you are coming from Plymouth.
Transport:
If you are unable to get yourself to the site, we have a limited number of seats available in our work van. We will be driving to the site from our office in Allet. If you would like a lift in the van with us, please message to reserve a spot as we have limited spaces available.
