Fort Widley in Portsmouth will offer guided tours of its Cold War Bunker as part of the Heritage Open Days on 19 September 2026 at 13:00. The tours will provide attendees with a unique insight into the history of the bunker.
Hidden within this historic fort lies a Cold War Control Centre, a rare survivor from an era when Britain prepared for a nuclear threat.
Join our guide on a one-hour tour through the underground tunnels to discover this remarkable bunker and learn how it would have operated during a national emergency.
The Bunker has remained virtually unchanged since the 1950s and was only ever brought into operation during the Great Storm of 1987.
Please note that this tour includes uneven surfaces, inclines and steps, and may not be suitable for those with limited mobility.This is a Heritage Open Day event run by the Peter Ashley Activity Centres staff and volunteers.
Recommended minimum age is 8.
Under 18's are to be accompanied by an adult ( max of 2 per adult)

The tour will take place rain or shine so please dress appropriately and wear sensible footwear. There will be dimly lit areas, uneven surfaces, steps and inclines, therefore this tour is not suitable for those with restricted mobility. Also the tour is not suitable for dogs.
The tour will leave from inside the courtyard by the reception. It will last approximately 60 minutes.
