🎤 Cognition Over Metrics
Scott Henderson
UX Designer, Jet2 & Jet2holidays.com
To open the evening, Scott Henderson explores how cognitive biases, behavioural patterns and human psychology influence conversion, retention and UX outcomes.
Cognition Over Metrics moves beyond screens and surface-level metrics to explore how designers can connect human behaviour with strategic business impact — using behavioural insight to make stronger decisions, develop better hypotheses and demonstrate the value of UX.
As AI increasingly automates design, testing and optimisation, Scott will also consider what makes designers uniquely valuable: understanding people, thinking strategically and connecting customer needs to business outcomes.
You’ll learn how to:
Understand how cognition influences behaviour — exploring how biases, mental shortcuts and psychological principles can affect conversion, retention and user decisions.
Connect UX decisions to business outcomes — looking beyond interface improvements to understand how design can influence conversion, retention and customer value.
Think more strategically as a designer — communicating UX decisions in ways that resonate with product, marketing, leadership and commercial stakeholders.
About Scott
Scott Henderson is a UX and Conversion Rate Optimisation professional with a “squiggly” career spanning digital marketing, e-commerce and UX.
His career has been driven by a longstanding fascination with behavioural psychology and experimentation — particularly understanding why people make the decisions they do and how this can shape better digital experiences.
Scott holds a Master’s degree in User Experience Design and has over 6 years of experience across B2B and B2C e-commerce, exploring the intersection of UX, psychology, experimentation and commercial strategy.

🌍 Beyond Human-Centred Design: Towards a Planet-Centred Practice
Eloise Smith-Foster
Anti-oppressive service designer, researcher & community organiser
To close the evening, Eloise Smith-Foster asks a challenging question:
Why do we centre humans when our work affects an interdependent web of life?
Even with the best intentions, user-centred approaches can reinforce harmful business norms by treating people and nature as resources.
Drawing on a decade of experience, Eloise will explore some of the problematic assumptions embedded in everyday UX methods — from user interviews to the Double Diamond — and examine what it might mean to work differently.
Through case studies and planet-centred frameworks, she’ll explore alternatives while acknowledging the organisational contradictions and practical challenges that designers face.
Rather than offering clear-cut solutions, this session creates space to reflect, rethink entrenched practices and identify realistic steps towards more planet-centred design in your own work.
About Eloise
Eloise Smith-Foster is an anti-oppressive service designer, researcher and community organiser, whose collaborations include Futurice, B Lab, the NHS and Arriva Rail.
She is a Design Council Design for Planet Expert and contributed to the newly launched Skills for Planet Blueprint.
Eloise is also the founder of Becoming Riverkin, a social enterprise working to embed nature as a meaningful voice in organisational decision-making.
