Ideal for those beginning to think more seriously about writing poetry, or those who have been writing for a while but want to explore poetry within a short-course framework, this course of four sessions covers the essentials of poetry, from why we write it to how it works.

This course will explore the rules of form and how we might keep or break them, the role of voice or the speaker in our poems, experimental or conceptual writing and how to edit our work.

Each session will include writing exercises, writing time and a chance to share work.

Tutor: Suzannah Evans Furnass lives in Sheffield and has published two poetry books, Near Future and Space Baby with Nine Arches Press. In 2019 she was a Gladstone’s Library Writer in Residence, and in 2021 received a Northern Writers’ Award. Her work has been described as ‘doom-pop poetry with an apocalyptic edge.’ Her most recent title is Green, a pamphlet published by Bad Betty Press.
