Gaza Flotilla Participants to share experiences at Sligo Palestine Solidarity Meeting Friday 2nd Oct 2026 at 8pm Glasshouse Hotel Sligo

Sligo’s Dr. Margaret Connolly, who took part in the recent Gaza Flotilla, will be joined by her fellow Flotilla participants Professor Maju Brunette and Louise McCormack as guest speakers.

Professor Brunette, of Ohio University, who is a renown global leader in tackling inequalities in health research, whilst Louise McCormack is the founder of the Irish Alliance for Trustworthy AI where she aligns with her experience of promoting human rights and collective action. Sligo GP Dr. Margaret Connolly is well known locally and nationally as a human rights advocate and Palestinian Solidarity activist.

The meeting, organised by the Sligo Palestine Solidarity Campaign is themed ‘Awakening Global Conscience’ and explores how locally, nationally and internationally a focus is maintained on how to end Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

Speaking to The Sligo Champion, local campaign spokesperson Chris MacManus said:

“Netanyahu and the Israeli right-wing are intent on trying to annihilate the Palestinian people, and fully colonising all of their lands. They believe this can be done because the full weight of global pressure against Israel has not been enforced."

“A step change in action must be taken at every level – locally, nationally and internationally. "

“Political influence and pressure from governments in the global north and south, and by multilateral institutions such as the EU, is needed at this time to exert maximum boycott, divestment and sanction measures. However, as a former MEP, I cannot overstate that the inaction of the EU is an absolute disgrace. "

“Ultimately, it is for the Palestinian people to determine the future of their struggle and collective destiny. "

“Just as the Palestinians have nothing more to give, the international community must not delay. Palestine cannot wait.”

“I encourage people to come to the meeting on Friday evening.”
